The Roman Centurion | Sermon

Mar 29, 2026    Phil Anderson

📘 Short Summary / Outline

On this Palm Sunday, we conclude our Easter series by standing beside the Roman centurion at the foot of the cross. A hardened soldier, trained to obey, to control, and to carry out Rome’s justice—yet in a single moment, he becomes a witness to the greatest act of love the world has ever known. What he saw moved him to declare, “Truly this was the Son of God.”

1. Christ Died (Matthew 27:50)

The centurion watched Jesus breathe His last. He saw the innocence, the sacrifice, and the purpose behind His death.

- Romans 3:23

- Romans 6:23

- Romans 10:9–10

- Romans 10:13

- John 3:3

- Titus 2:11

Invitation: Will you completely surrender your life to Jesus and receive forgiveness for your sins?

2. Curtain Destroyed (Matthew 27:51)

The temple curtain tore from top to bottom—God Himself opening the way.

- Hebrews 10:19–22

We now have total access to God through Jesus.

3. Control Displayed (Matthew 27:51–53)

The centurion saw supernatural signs that revealed Christ’s authority:

- Nature shook

- Death was confronted

Jesus was not a victim—He was in complete control.

Application:

The centurion saw enough to believe. He saw Christ’s death, God’s open access, and the Lord’s undeniable power. His response was confession and surrender. What will yours be?
