Mary’s Gift to Jesus | Sermon
📘 Short Summary / Outline
Today we begin our Easter sermon series, Faces at the Cross, by looking at Mary of Bethany, a woman whose act of worship continues to challenge and inspire believers. In John 12:1–8, Mary offers Jesus a gift so personal, so costly, and so misunderstood that it becomes a timeless picture of true devotion.
1. Mary’s Gift Was Close (v. 3)
- Worship is never inherited or second‑hand.
- It is a personal response to a personal Savior.
2. Mary’s Gift Was Costly (vv. 3, 5)
- She offered something precious and sacrificial.
- Our culture often gives Jesus what is comfortable, not what is costly.
3. Mary’s Gift Was Contagious (v. 3)
- Her worship filled the house.
- Genuine devotion influences and inspires others.
4. Mary’s Gift Was Criticized (vv. 4–6)
- Even those close to Jesus may misunderstand your worship.
- Criticism does not diminish the value of your offering.
5. Mary’s Gift Was Counted (vv. 7–8)
- Jesus noticed, valued, and honored her gift.
- What you offer to Him truly matters.
Application:
Mary teaches us that worship is intimate, sacrificial, influential, misunderstood by some, and deeply treasured by Jesus. As we journey toward the cross, her example calls us to offer Christ our very best.
