What Side of the Cross Are You On? | Sermon

Mar 22, 2026    Phil Anderson

📘 Short Summary / Outline

Today we look at one of the most powerful encounters at the cross—the conversation between Jesus and the thief crucified beside Him. In this moment, the Gospel is displayed with stunning clarity. Two men hang beside Jesus, both sinners, both dying, both seeing the same Savior—yet each responds differently. Every person must answer the same question: What will you do with Jesus?

1. The Thief Saw His Condition (Luke 23:41; Romans 3:23)

He admitted his guilt. No one can be saved until they acknowledge they are lost and in need of grace.

2. The Thief Received Clarity (Luke 23:41)

He recognized Jesus for who He truly is—sinless, righteous, and divine. Saving faith sees Jesus clearly.

3. The Thief Made a Change (Luke 23:42)

He turned to Jesus in faith. The Gospel transforms—Jesus not only forgives sin, He changes lives.

4. The Thief Had a Confidence (Luke 23:43)

He had no time to fix his life, perform good works, or follow Jesus physically—yet he was saved. Salvation is by grace alone.

Application:

Two thieves. One Savior. Two responses. One received eternal life; the other rejected it. Every person stands on one side of the cross or the other. What will you do with Jesus today?
