Simon and the Weight of the Cross | Sermon

Mar 15, 2026    Phil Anderson

📘 Short Summary / Outline

Today we look at Simon of Cyrene, the man compelled to carry Jesus’ cross. His brief but powerful appearance in Scripture paints a vivid picture of what it means to take up our own cross and follow Christ.

1. The Cross’ Responsibility (Matthew 27:32–33)

Following Jesus is not sentimental—it requires sacrifice, stamina, and surrender. Carrying the cross is a call to costly discipleship.

2. The Cross’ Humility (Luke 23:26)

The cross brings us low before it lifts us up. Simon’s unexpected assignment reminds us that true discipleship begins with humility.

3. The Cross’ Proximity (Luke 23:26; Luke 9:23)

The word opisthen means “behind” or “following after.” To carry the cross is to walk closely behind Jesus—near enough to feel the weight of His path.

4. The Cross’ Visibility

Genuine discipleship eventually becomes visible. Simon’s obedience was seen by many; our obedience will be seen as well.

5. The Cross’ Capability (Mark 15:21; Romans 16:13)

Simon’s sons, Rufus and Alexander, became known believers. The crosses we carry can influence generations. Faithful obedience today can shape lives tomorrow.

Application:

Simon’s story reminds us that cross‑bearing is not optional—it is the way of Jesus. When we surrender, follow closely, and carry the weight He places on us, our lives become a testimony of His power and grace.
