What Controls You? | Sermon
📘 Short Summary / Outline
Even when weather keeps us apart, God’s Word still meets us where we are. In this message, Rev. Phil challenges us to examine what truly controls our lives—our sinful nature or the Holy Spirit. Romans 8:5–10 reveals that spiritual direction begins with honest reflection.
1. What Dominates My Thoughts? (Romans 8:5–6)
- Following Jesus brings real transformation (2 Corinthians 5:17; Romans 12:2).
- We become what we consistently dwell on.
- Philippians 4:8 calls us to fix our minds on what is true and godly.
2. What Dictates My Behavior? (Romans 8:7–9)
- A Spirit‑controlled life produces obedience.
- God calls us to live as obedient children (1 Peter 1:14).
- Obey quickly and trust God with the consequences (Psalm 119:60).
3. What Demonstrates My Priorities? (Romans 8:10)
- Earthly priorities reveal the flesh is winning.
- Eternal priorities reveal the Spirit is leading.
- What drives me, upsets me, and moves me exposes what I value most (2 Corinthians 4:18).
Application: The Spirit‑led life is intentional. When our thoughts, behaviors, and priorities align with God’s truth, the Holy Spirit—not our sinful nature—becomes the controlling influence of our lives.
