A Poolside Perspective | Sermon

Jan 11, 2026    Phil Anderson

📘 Short Summary / Outline

In this message from the Forward series, Rev. Phil explores the story of the man at the pool of Bethesda and reveals four barriers that can keep us from moving forward spiritually. Jesus’ question—“Do you want to be made well?”—invites us to confront what holds us back and step into real change.

1. Misplaced Identity (John 5:5)

- Long-term pain and disappointment can convince us that change is impossible.

- When suffering shapes our identity, transformation feels threatening.

2. Misguided Methods (John 5:2–4)

- The man trusted the pool more than the Savior standing before him.

- When we rely on anything other than Jesus, we miss what He is doing.

3. Manufactured Excuses (John 5:6–7)

- People who failed him

- Circumstances that beat him

- Excuses can keep us stuck when Jesus is calling us forward.

4. Moral Compromise (John 5:14)

- Nothing stunts spiritual progress more than sin.

- Jesus calls us to walk in honesty, holiness, and newness of life.

Application: Moving forward requires honesty, surrender, and a willingness to let Jesus redefine our identity, methods, and direction.
