✨ Short Summary / Outline

In this third part of Jesus’ teaching on hypocrisy, Pastor Phil continues exploring how spiritual disciplines—giving, praying, and fasting—reveal the true condition of our hearts. Jesus calls His followers to pursue God’s approval, not the applause of people.

1. Pray Secretly to Your Heavenly Father (Matthew 6:6)

The notes emphasize that public prayer is good, but it cannot replace private prayer. Jesus teaches that who we are “in secret” is who we truly are. The Father sees what is done privately and rewards sincere devotion.

2. Pray Specifically to Your Heavenly Father (Matthew 6:7–8)

Jesus warns against empty, repetitive phrases. Prayer is not a performance—it is a child speaking honestly with a loving Father. God already knows our needs and invites us into genuine communion. As the notes remind us, “He is there. He is ready. He is willing. And He is able!”

3. Watch Your Motives When You Fast (Matthew 6:16–18)

Fasting is expected, but Jesus condemns fasting done for attention. Hypocrites make themselves look miserable to appear spiritual. True fasting is quiet, normal, and focused on God alone. The Father who sees in secret will reward sincere fasting.

4. The Audience of One

The conclusion of the notes reminds us that spiritual disciplines are not performed before the audience of many, but before the audience of One. Jesus Himself modeled this as He journeyed toward the cross—seeking only the pleasure of His Father.

Application:

Authentic faith is lived privately before God long before it is seen publicly by others. Jesus calls us to sincerity, humility, and wholehearted devotion in every spiritual practice.
