✨ Short Summary / Outline
Tonight we reach the sixth and final antithesis in Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount—a teaching that overturns every natural instinct and reveals the supernatural character of the kingdom. Pastor Phil walks us through Jesus’ command to "love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us," a command that is not humanly possible but divinely empowered.
1. Loving Our Enemies Shows We Belong to the Father (Matthew 5:43–44)
- The scribes narrowed “love your neighbor” into “love your group.”
- Jesus expands it—love even those who oppose you.
- Love is an action, not a feeling; prayer is the posture that sustains it.
2. God Is the Model of Enemy‑Love (Matthew 5:45)
- God gives sun and rain to the righteous and the unrighteous.
- Kingdom citizens imitate their Father’s generosity and mercy.
3. Kingdom Love Goes Beyond Human Nature (Matthew 5:46–47)
- Returning evil for good is evil.
- Returning good for good is human.
- Returning good for evil—that is divine.
4. Love That Reflects Heaven (Matthew 5:48)
- Jesus calls us toward the perfect love of the Father.
- This is not achieved by effort but by grace working within us.
- As Martin Luther King Jr. said, “Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”
Application:
Loving enemies is not optional—it is the evidence of a transformed heart. As we follow Jesus, we learn to respond not with anger or retaliation, but with mercy, prayer, and Christlike love.
