✨ Short Summary / Outline

Pastor Phil continues Jesus’ teaching on kingdom relationships—moving from our *words* to our *actions*. In Matthew 5:38–42, Jesus overturns the world’s instinct for retaliation and replaces it with sacrificial service, gracious responses, and neighbor‑shaped love.

1. Do Not Retaliate Against Evil (Matthew 5:38–39)

- “Eye for an eye” was meant for courts, not personal revenge.

- Jesus calls His followers to reject vengeance and respond with grace.

- Kingdom people treat enemies as neighbors, not opponents.

2. Turn the Other Cheek (Matthew 5:39)

- Jesus uses the example of an insulting slap to teach humility and restraint.

- He modeled this perfectly in His own suffering.

- Justice and forgiveness can coexist—but revenge has no place in the kingdom.

3. Let Grace Abound Where Demands Abound (Matthew 5:40)

- When wronged legally, disciples go beyond what is required.

- Radical generosity reflects the heart of the Father.

4. Go the Extra Mile (Matthew 5:41)

- What was once forced by Roman law becomes voluntary service for Christ.

- Compassion—not obligation—defines kingdom action.

- Serving others opens doors for gospel witness.

5. Be Ready to Help Those in Need (Matthew 5:42)

- When someone has a legitimate need, disciples respond with open hands.

- We give because God has given abundantly to us.

- Mercy becomes a testimony of the gospel.

Application: Jesus calls His people to a life where truth shapes our speech and love shapes our actions. Sacrificial service is not weakness—it is Christlikeness.
